Altering or Forging

  • What It Is: Changing the expiration date or lot number on a permit.
  • Violation: This is considered fraudulent activity.

Counterfeiting

  • What It Is: Using a fake permit that looks like a real permit.
  • Violation: The permit is not valid.

Unauthorized Possession and Use

  • What It Is: Using a permit that was not issued for the vehicle in question.
  • Examples:
    • A visitor permit used on a staff or student vehicle.
    • A staff permit used on a student vehicle.
    • A permit sold to someone else used on the wrong vehicle.

Illegal Parking

  • What It Is: Parking in areas where it’s not allowed.
  • Examples:
    • Parking along a yellow curb or fire lane.
    • Parking in a hatched area or non-parking space.

Improper Parking

  • As Signed
    • Parking in an area restricted by signs.
  • No Appropriate Permit
    • Parking without the correct parking permit for the area.
  • Loading Zone
    • Parking in a loading zone for longer than allowed.
  • Over the Stall Line
    • Parking outside the designated stall (e.g., over the line).

Overtime Parking at Meters

  • Parking in a metered stall after the time has expired.

Reserved Parking Violations

  • Without a Reserved Permit
    • Parking in a reserved space without the proper reserved permit.

Improper Affixing or Displaying Permit

  • The permit is not displayed correctly:
    • Not attached to the lower driver's side windshield.
    • Not hanging from the rearview mirror.

Failure to Pay for Parking

  • Failure to Purchase a Parking Receipt
    • Parking in a pay-by-stall space without paying through ParkMobile.

Parking in Accessible Spaces

  • Improper Parking in a Disability Stall
    • Parking in a medical accessible parking stall without a valid medical permit.

Bicycle Violations

  • Failure to Display a Current Bicycle Registration
    • Bicycle parked on campus without a free bicycle registration sticker.
  • Improper Bicycle Parking
    • Parking a bicycle anywhere other than a designated bicycle rack.

Ticketing Guidelines

State of Iowa Laws

  • Iowa State University follows the State of Iowa motor vehicle laws on campus.

Parking & Traffic Flow

  • There are limited parking spaces near academic and administrative buildings.
  • Campus streets are controlled to allow only essential vehicles (e.g., sanitation trucks, CyRide).
  • Parking rules apply regardless of whether gates are open or closed.

Notice of Violations

  • A written and/or email notice will be issued for all parking violations.
  • The violation notice will be placed on the vehicle and serves as notice to the owner and operator of the vehicle.

Sanctions for Ongoing Violations

  • If a violation continues for more than one hour, additional sanctions may be applied.
  • Sanctions may be assessed against the vehicle owner, operator, or anyone whose registered under the vehicle.
  • These sanctions could be charged to the violator’s university account, student tuition bills, or employee wages.
